January has brought a few changes to Heritage Farm, namely that Pablo Feliz and myself, Camryn Pennington, have taken over as the new farm managers.  We are looking forward to the growing season and have already begun preparations for the garden.

Visitor Jay displays his handiwork, a new worm bin.  The worms love to eat our veggie scraps, and we love the compost they produce.

Its warming up and things are starting to finally look like they are growing but we also got hit very hard with a strong freeze. It took out a lot of tomato plants in the hoophouse. There may not be many for sale this year. Everything else survived well. We got put in another few beds of cabbage, broccoli, and kohlrabi, thanks to the help of some volunteers.

The trap I had set finally caught the little rat that was eating the pepper plants. It chewed down about 100 of the sweet peppers while they were only a 1/2" high. It didnt go for the hot peppers. It appears that the row covers mad a great protective run from the farm cats to have their way with the little pea sprouts. On the last day of the wonderful dry spell we had through most of February I was fortunate enough to hook up the Rotovator to the tractor and get most of the fields tilled up at bit. The Rotovator by the way is a 72" rototiller that runs off the power of the tractor. It is much faster than a little Troybilt walk behind tiller.

Once I sat calmly to fill each little square with one seed, I load them up in "the console". This is a table with a covering of plastic which lives inside the greenhouse. It is heated from below with space heaters to keep the soil and air warm. Jim skillfully headed up this project.  Eric and Vince helped the most, and rest of us lent a hand when we could.
